THE Irish language fraternity is in uproar this morning after in emerged that Sinn Fein Irish will the standard used for any new Stormont legislation.
Last night new communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said she was minded to make her party’s modern take on this ancient language the bench mark for future usage in Northern Ireland.
Gaeilgeoir of 50 years standing Dr Sheamus Macgiollamccorkindale was quick to respond to this latest development.
He told TGL, “Though I admit they didn’t make too big a muck of themselves doing preambles in the Assembly nominating Ministers, this is a step too far.
“It’s a real body blow after all our years of lobbying against DUP intransigence. You only have to look at the Irish language PR blunders and embarrassments Sinn Fein have had over the years to see where this is going to lead us. It’s like letting the weans loose in the classroom.
“If this goes ahead our beautiful Gaelic teanga (language) in the north of Ireland will be truly fecked anois!”
Defending the move Minister Hargey said: “Whilst I totally respect Dr Macgiollamccorkindale’s view, it is my opinion that Sinn Fein Irish will put us more on the same level with our young people thus making the national language more attractive to them!”
